Modern, reliable and practical plastic pipes are an excellent solution for arranging plumbing systems in Langley. Their advantage is quick installation and low weight of the pipeline system, ease of upgrading the system and repair of pipes.

The lack of plastic pipes is that a poorly welded joint inevitably loses tightness, and the pipes themselves (with the exception of reinforced ones) do not withstand any mechanical damage.

Wet pipes, the appearance of drops of water, similar to dew, in the area of fittings, or a sharp drop in pressure in the system directly warn the owner that the time has come to pay attention to the plumbing system, and with his own hands to eliminate the problem that has appeared.

If the leak is not eliminated in time, then even a small trickle of water can cause a lot of damage, falling on electrical appliances, power lines or new repairs to neighbors living on the floor (or even several floors) below.

To repair a plumbing or heating system made of plastic pipes you will need minimal practical skills and a set of special tools. A simple repair of a plastic pipe with your own hands is quite possible for an amateur, and for a professional, it is not difficult to repair a leak that has suddenly appeared.

Important! The main task of the installer-repairman - is to choose the best way to eliminate the problem, and to eliminate the leakage as quickly as possible.

How to eliminate a leak in a plastic pipe

The appearance of moisture on the pipes can talk about depressurization system

The first action to be taken by the installer engaged in repairing the water mains: turn off, if possible, the water supply to the system or to the area to be restored. After localization of the site of leakage or cessation of the water supply, you can proceed to the restoration work.

Next, select the best option, how to eliminate the leak in plastic pipes. Mandatory conditions - the leak must be eliminated in the shortest possible time, and the detected pipe crack or hole must be repaired with the highest quality possible.

Important! Shut off the water supply should always be in front of the area where the leak is detected. In a multi-loop system, in order to eliminate the leakage, it is enough to turn off the water supply directly to the circuit being repaired, also shutting off the bypass valve of the local section of the water supply system.

How to seal holes in a plastic pipe - repair options and causes of leakage

The most common problem of plastic plumbing - loss of tightness at the joints of pipes. A leak occurs for various reasons, depending on the pipe installation variant, the type of fittings used and the installer’s skill level, for example: incorrectly selected temperature conditions during the soldering of plastic plumbing lead to the destruction of the integrity of the transition pipe-fitting-pipe.

A leak appears, and for the repair of the system, it is necessary to cut the entire assembly and assemble it from new components. Coat seal compound will not succeed;
  • loosening the nut. It’s easy to fix the leakage of the fitting with your own hands (just tighten the clamping nut) if the inner tabs are intact and the nut has not burst. Putting a sealant on such a fitting also fails, and if it is damaged, it must be replaced;
  • poorly pressed crimp fitting. It can also be used in combination with a plastic pipe, and if such a joint is leaking, then it is necessary to press in a new connecting fitting. Manufacturers of this type of fittings strongly recommend not pressing the same shrink ring twice with special pliers;
  • not properly prepared pipe. The pipe joint, made by the method of sliding fittings, will inevitably give a leak if the pipe cut was uneven;
  • plastic pipe joints flowed by the method of adhesive bonding from an incorrectly chosen type of adhesive, or when the interval after the installation work is too small before the system is put into operation. The glue has not dried, and the surface of the joints does not have time to polymerize to full tightness.

The most reliable way to repair a damaged pipeline is to replace the damaged section with a new plastic pipe, which is reliably welded through fittings to the main system. But it is not always possible to implement the method of high-temperature connections, and then other methods are used to repair the pipeline.

How to eliminate a leak in a plastic pipe

With the help of the clamp, you can quickly eliminate the leakage of water

Tightening clamp. As a temporary method to eliminate leakage is the use of clamping clamps. Having added a collar with screw clamps with a layer of waterproof plastic material, it is possible to almost completely eliminate leakage.

The method is good because the water will flow freely through the plumbing system. This is faster and more reliable than just sealing up with a sealant or sealing a leaky pipe.

This method of repair does not require shutting off the water supply, the only drawback is the inevitable weakening of the attachment points of the clamp with time and loss of tightness of the connection.

Cold Welding. Before you cover up the leak in plastic pipes, you need to prepare for the work the necessary amount of the component: carefully knead the right amount of substance in your hands, or mix in proper proportions. Apply to the damaged area, carefully seal the crack on the pipe and wait until it hardens.

Adhesive bandage. A pair of clamp clamps in conjunction with a material impregnated with adhesive (two-component adhesive + rubber for polypropylene pipes or a bandage + cement for sewer pipes) will help to quickly eliminate the leak with your own hands.

Advantages: the water supply cannot be turned off. The disadvantage of the method is that for high-pressure systems the use of an adhesive bandage is prohibited.

Adhesive (sealing) tape. A good option for quick repair, if you can not cover a small hole with sealant. The tape is applied to the damaged area in several layers.

How to eliminate a leak in a plastic pipe

Adhesive tape for pipes can be used as a temporary but reliable measure.

Special sealant. This is another quick method to eliminate leaks at the junction of a Plastic pipe. But it is rather a temporary solution than a quality repair.

Important! Any of the methods chosen to restore the tightness of a section of the plumbing system or pipe joints requires preliminary preparation of the pipe itself. The pipe is decreased, cleaned, if necessary, the joint of the future connection of the pipe and fittings are processed.

There are three types of sealing compounds:

  • neutral type of sealant, suitable for all types of pipes, applied with a mounting gun;
  • acid sealant, but it is not used on fragile pipes and on pipelines transporting acids;

Silicone sealant - universal composition, used to seal the socket connection at the junction of sewer pipes.

In the case of heating systems, which can also be assembled from polypropylene pipes, it is somewhat more difficult to eliminate the flow. As a rule, a part of the system is laid using a flush-mounted method, and before sealing plastic pipes, accidentally damaged during construction works or broken down naturally, it is necessary to determine exactly where the pipe flows in the mounted system. And for this, you need to dismantle the decorative panels or, in the worst case, open the wall covering.
